There’s beauty to be found in what others consider to throwaway items – and an exhibit at San Francisco State embodies this. The artworks in “Portions” come from a place in the outer Richmond called Anzfer Farms. According to the website of the gallery in SF State’s Cesar Chavez Student Center, the workshop was started by Jonathan Anzalone (“Anz”) and Joseph Ferriso (“Fer”) in 2009 as a place to create objects and installations. The creators use mostly discarded (and reclaimed) wood. And if the photos on the Anzfer blog are any indication, these folks do turn the ugly into the desirable. Some of the furniture they make looks like what you’d find in a college student’s first apartment – stylish, but maybe not that practical – while other pieces look like they could come out of a high-end catalog or gallery. The artists have also put light bulbs in discarded pieces of wood that could be lamps or modern-art sculptures – or both.
