San Francisco: port city, land of reinvention. Lots of gay people, lots of drag queens, plenty of hot outfits. If a woman is imitating a man imitating a woman, maybe you’d be tempted to burp out “meta” or “postmodern” ― and people, that’s fine. But let’s describe faux queens in terms even the townies among us enjoy: beautiful and compelling. Trained dancer and intellectual feminist Fauxnique (Monique Jenkinson) brings her one-lady show, Faux Real, to the stage amidst flouncing costume and a boon of glimmering, artfully applied makeup. You can take in the visual spectacular whilst auteur Fauxnique ruminates on artifice, performance, and the ties between gay men and women. She’s the first cisgendered female (meaning she’s okay with the gender she was assigned at birth) to win the Miss Trannyshack pageant, and she has taken her smarts and her visuals all over this country and to London. She’s emblematic of our city’s fierce individuality.
