The tattoo and fine art communities have long existed in uneasy symbiosis. The fine art world has provided the tattoo scene with some of its best practitioners ― it’s one of the few sure ways a visual artist can make a living – but the relationship hasn’t gone both ways. Tattoo artists have had a hard time getting respect from the art elites. In recent years, there’s been a bit more interaction. A new generation of curators and gallery owners, raised in an era in which tattoos are part of mainstream culture, are more open to displaying the work of the ink-and-needle crowd. A third party that finishes this trifecta: The DIY punk movement of the past two decades has inspired an increasing number of musicians to pursue dual careers in the arts, playing shows by night and designing gig posters by day. “Scream with Me” merges these three groups, showing work by members of bands including Alkaline Trio, Gallows, Converge, the Constantines, and Ceremony alongside art by in-demand tattoo artists such as Uncle Allan, Henry Lewis, Chad Koeplinger, and Lizzie Renaud. While an exhibition such this probably won't mend the rift between the camps, it's another demonstration that the barriers that separate high art from traditionally low art are being razed.
