Rapper Pigeon John sees the potential for humor in hip-hop. He prefers to liken himself to "a young Sean Connery in Cabo," rather than attempt to fabricate a nefarious, crime-ridden backstory, and his songs are more likely to needle their narrator over a date gone wrong than threaten violence. But that doesn't mean he is a rap lightweight: He paid his dues on the L.A. freestyle scene, and has formed an affiliation with the Bay Area's premier progressive label, Quannum, which will release his new album, Dragon Slayer, next week. Having been compared to a modern-day Cab Calloway, John's live show is all about ensuring the crowd goes home smiling, not scowling.
