Gorilla My Dreams

One great thing about this year’s Alternative Press Expo is that Lynda Barry is among its special guests. That’s great because Barry, an alt-comics doyenne, is herself just plain great. Also because the acronym for the Alternative Press Expo, which brings together artists, writers, and publishers of alt-comics, invites fun with primate puns — calling it a “big crazy APE” and such. Barry has very thoughtfully played along, naming her new book Picture This: The Near-Sighted Monkey Book. For that matter, so has another of the special guests, Tony Millionaire, the man behind Sock Monkey. A few points also go to the sometimes simian-seeming protagonist in Wilson, the latest book from Oakland’s own special guest Daniel Clowes. APE exhibitors include Hyperactive Monkey as well as Monkey and Seal. Megan Kelso, meanwhile, of The Squirrel Mother, may not have gotten the memo, or perhaps she misunderstood it. But anyway, she’s great, too. So you get the idea: Go APE.
