The Buddhist notion of “ten thousand things” refers to the simultaneous connection and independence of everything in this little hut we call the universe. Bring this idea into a conversation about family and familiarity, and hear the metaphor machine roar! In “The Myth of Ten Thousand Things,” Sasha Hom and Dylan Bolles use multiple art forms — music, installation, dance — to craft narratives about family. They refer to their own mythologies, while also being consciously connected to (and affected by) the moment of creation. In this way, each person who attends today’s event shapes the narrative by influencing the space, whether it’s the way you smell, speak, or move. Earlier in the day, there is an open-studio performance segment. Later there’s a sit-down version of Hom and Bolles’ collaboration, “The Edge of the Pacific.” Bolles often creates original musical instruments specific to a performance. This time, a kitchen-table guitar with silk strings emerges as integral to the storytelling. If you are avoiding predictable art, then this is your hookup.
