The Genuine Article
Dirty pop. Man-pop? Independent pop, obviously, but really, how do you call the kind of pop Kelley Stoltz and the Fresh and Onlys play? This guy and this band are the tippy-top of the post-punk, pro-soul, Kinks-worshipping pop scene around here, and influences include not only the Beatles but also Bill Fay, meaning the sound sways from earworm to doom-glam. It isn't folk, it isn't rock, (for all that it rocks) and it isn't alt-country, but fans from those scenes flock to these dudes' shows to get their head-bouncy guitar hooks. Of course they're different from one another — Stoltz leans toward singer-songwriter and the F&Os toward garage — but together they're part of something very, very good. Maybe that's why tonight is a double album release party: Stoltz' To Dreamers and the Fresh and Onlys' Play It Strange have the buzz they deserve; get your tickets ASAP.
