Rocking out with the savage abandon of Bigfoot on a three-day Viagra-and-tequila bender, Portland, Ore.-based quartet Red Fang has road-dogged its way into the hearts of heshers across the nation. Packed with pulverizing gems that recall the punkish side of early Queens of the Stone Age and the more tuneful recent output of the Melvins, the band's self-titled debut was one of the essential heavy albums of 2009. The hilarious Society for Creative Anachronism nerds vs. beer-soaked burnouts battle depicted in the video for "Prehistoric Dog" provided some nice viral exposure, but this wrecking crew doesn't need interweb gimmicks to spread the gospel of its ferocious live show. Recently signed to noted metal imprint Relapse Records, Red Fang will, we hope, preview material from its forthcoming sophomore album (due early next year) when the band provides support for evangelical hard-rock zealots Valient Thorr.
