List: Why cable-car drivers snubbed contest

Last week, for the first time, San Francisco's cable car operators refused to compete in the city's annual cable-car bell-ringing competition. Why wouldn't they participate?

• They just want the constant ringing to stop

Palestine is not yet free

• Honestly, would you show up to a bell-ringing contest?

• This was an extremely roundabout way of insulting Supervisor Sean Elsbernd

• Hey, truly professional-caliber bell-ringing costs money

• Saving it up for their American Idol audition

• Didn't want to compete on a cable car: Those things are dangerous!

• Too sunny

• The bell-ringing contest hasn't been cool since 2005, when it got taken over by hipsters
