The sitar is such a beautiful and unusual instrument to the Western ear, and how better to become further acquainted than by listening to a renowned player work that gourd chamber? Ashwin Batish studied under his father, Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish (who played background vichitra veena on the Beatles’ Help), and regularly invites his 12-year-old son, Keshav, onstage as part of his act. Batish has expanded upon the tradition of sitar music by incorporating elements of pop, rock, jazz, calypso, and funk. It’s a complex and interesting fusion. Batish is also joined by Myron Dove, a bassist who has played with Carlos Santana and Herbie Hancock, among others. Their sonic superlatives are complemented by dancer and choreographer Rasa Vitalia for a couple of songs. Whether or not you’re familiar with the music, your mind is likely to be delightfully blown by what Batish creates.
