Hopeton "Scientist" Brown transformed the instrumental reggae-based form known as dub in the 1980s via a wild series of albums for U.K. label Greensleeves. The former King Tubby apprentice experimented with delay and reverb effects, dramatic drum and bass EQing, and radical mixing board improvisations using rhythm tracks laid down by Jamaican band the Roots Radics. He also gave the results crazy titles like Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, Scientist Encounters Pac Man, and Scientist Wins the World Cup. The Radics, founded in 1978 by bassist Errol "Flabba" Holt and guitarist Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont, were the foremost reggae session band of the 1980s, laying down tracks for Yellowman, Eek a Mouse, Barrington Levy, Johnny Osbourne, and others. Scientist mixed many of these sessions and will conjure his magic in a rare live pairing with the Radics, including Dub Syndicate's Style Scott on drums.
