Invaders, Reconsidered
Talia Greene explores themes of order and disorder through several series of prints in this show, Colony. The series at the center of the exhibit combine portraits of 19th century westerners with so-called “Orientalist” postcards, which were traded by westerners in colonial times. (“Orientalism” refers to the western depiction of eastern culture through art and literature.) Superimposed on the images are insects. This juxtaposition plays with assumptions about colonizers and subjects. In this case, the insects are the invaders, cloaking and burying the subjects in the photos. In another series of prints, Weaver Colony, Greene was inspired by the organizational behavior of weaver ants. She has created ant towers that move across the gallery walls and around posts. They also spill onto the floors.
