R&B in 2010 is a sprawling artistic field that includes music as diverse as Usher's raunchy radio fodder, Erykah Badu's cerebral funk, Beyoncé's saucy soul, Keyshia Cole's sweet ballads, and Dam-Funk's underground grooves. Frenchman Arnaud Bernard takes cues from all of the above to make loosely swinging productions under the moniker Onra. After albums of sampled Indian and Vietnamese music à la Madlib, his most recent recording, Long Distance, is packed with lurching, looped tracks; electro-funk reminiscent of Zapp; and slick New Jack Swing vocal contributions from Oliver Daysoul and Walter Mecca. For the live S.F. performance, Bernard and Buddy Sativa will tease soul out of various pads, synths, and effects.
