Let That Music Take Me Far Away

Hard to say why local punk band La Plebe reminds us so much of Serbian film director Emir Kusturica, but there you go: It does. Although the band — its horn section augmenting muscly bilingual punk party music — is fiercely Bay Arean, the Eastern European connection persists. La Plebe has toured the Balkans four times to great acclaim, even though we're not thinking audiences there speak either of the band's main languages. Probably it's just that the music in Kusturica's films, often performed during inebriated wedding processionals, is as sad, fast, and heartfelt as La Plebe's, and as drinking-appropriate. A new record, Brazo en Brazo, is full of the bouncy, furious, and political songs for which the band is worshipped, in all kinds of weird corners of the world.
