Actress: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 3 2010

San Francisco's Big Up magazine has been covering the world of underground, beat-driven culture for two years now, and on Friday it celebrates with a massive dance party at the freshly launched Public Works club. The local rag will bring in South London's leftfield beat-techno-electro-bass producer Actress to headline its second birthday party, a set that also marks his first-ever performance in our fine city. Born Darren Cunningham, Actress also runs the excellent Werk Discs label, which is home to electronic luminaries Zomby and Lone, among others. He'll be joined at Big Up's birthday jump-off by a few like-minded DJs and producers, including Low Limit (one half of Lazer Sword), up-and-comer Jus Wan, and beat-scene wunderkind Shlohmo.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
