If Vampire Weekend's diluted West African highlife music or Diplo's sloppily remixed Angolan bass aren't your thing, Côte d'Ivoire's Magic System offers a compelling Afro-club antidote. Formed in 1996, this quartet plays zouglou, an Ivorian pop-dance style built with steady electronic drum programming and soaring harmonic choruses. The results are a truly Francophone blend of European house and Congo's lively, melodic soukous. Recent Magic System tracks have gone even more global, incorporating South Asian bhangra drumming and collaborations with Algerian Rai star Khaled. Joining Magic System is Paris breakdance duo Les Twins, whose tricky stop-start moves take Oakland's turf dancing — a smooth, slow-moving style — a step further. African pop bands don't often tour the Bay Area these days, so consider this a rare dose of the real thing.
