Hyperlocal Geometry

Sometimes it can be good to set boundaries. To prove the point, organizers of the “200 Yards” project invited photographers to shoot whatever they wanted — the only restriction being that images had to be snapped within a 200-yard radius of a chosen location (in this case, a bar in the Mission District). At that bar, organizers present the work of 12 photographers — some professional, some amateur — that offer a multilayered portrait of this vibrant neighborhood. The project's judges say one winner, Carrie Brienholt, is indicative of what they were seeking: Her shots depict nooks and crannies that even residents of the surrounding blocks might miss, in addition to a number of “quintessential Mission” shots that deserved recognition. (A sample can be seen on the 200 Yards website.) Two other winners have online portfolios that show extensive experience in shooting places — including Alaska, Mexico, and Cambodia. Wonder how they and other winners applied the lens to their tiny assigned circle of San Francisco?
