Stick a Folk in It
Bay Areans have plenty of live music to choose from tonight, as we do every Friday night. Big hipster warehouse rock show, alt-country titans in a palace, gay spaz-punk genius at the art gallery. But maybe you don't feel like doing any of those things, exactly, and you decide against driving to Petaluma to see Y&T. Say you're more in the mood for warm and relaxed. Ashland, Ore.'s Kites & Crows is the kind of band its entire hometown turns out to see when it's booked at Alex's on the plaza above the Lithia water fountain. Ashland is a town of extremely wealthy old people, dreadlocked hotties, mountain men, and manic Shakespeare-festival workers, and they all love the sweet, philosophical folk songs of Kites & Crows. Ashland law requires all indie bands to be named for obscure Shakespeare plays (just kidding), but K&C is taken from Coriolanus, which is kinda bad-ass. Banjo, acoustic guitar, and cello underscore singer and songwriter Mysha Caruso's appealing, honest voice and the sugar harmonies provided by Jesse Baldwin and Nancy Martin; they tour behind a new record, Golden Room.
