Truth embedded in humor or satire is no less powerful than truth delivered by any other means. In fact, it can be more powerful – just ask political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who drew more than 200,000 people at a recent rally in Washington, D.C. The same power lies in political cartoons. In 2005, for example, massive protests erupted across Europe and the Middle East and scores were killed after a Danish newspaper published cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad in an attempt to illustrate self-censorship within that religion. Kevin Kallaugher – or Kal, as he’s known by his artistic signature – has satirized people and events in politics for more than three decades for The Economist, one of the strongest voices in world affairs since 1843. In Drawn from the Economist: the Editorial Art of Kal, 40 of Kallaugher’s cartoons will be on display through March 13. During his years with the magazine, Kal has produced more than 3,000 cartoons, including 120 that appeared on the cover. He has depicted world leaders including American President George Bush (both of them, in fact), Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and longtime Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
