New York City is teeming with indie-rock bands, so if an upstart group wants to possess any chance of standing out in an overpopulated scene, it had better show off some personality. The members of Bear Hands separate themselves from the pack via their versatility, which is shown off in a video promoting the Brooklyn four-piece's recently released debut, Burning Bush Supper Club. The batch of abbreviated audio clips bounces between swift, taut dance-punk, sullen Modest Mouse impressions, breezy "Ooh wooh"–inflected Beach Boys pop, and an empyreal indie-pop daydream. "Crime Pays," the LP's most prominent cut, is somehow both grating and inviting. Backed by restrained post-punk, Dylan Rau's electronically mangled falsetto whines, "Everybody knows that crime pays/And everybody loves it," before diving into a little narrative that makes you wonder about his rap sheet. While far from perfect, Burning Bush is at least an auspicious beginning.
