Turn on the radio these days, and much of the commercial hip-hop you'll hear sounds like shirtless German trance from the early '90s. But as Zion I, Oakland's MC Zumbi and DJ AmpLive have spent more than a decade exploring the sonically sophisticated production techniques and rhythms of electronica. Their sonic adventure started in 2000 with the neo–drum 'n' bass motions of Mind Over Matter, and continues with the group's recently released seventh album, Atomic Clock, a lush combination of live instrumentation and electronic dub sensibilities.
