The preponderance of cracked ribs and shattered MacBook screens among our friends demonstrates that booze and bicycles don’t generally mix. But so long as the drunkies leave their velocipedes at home, the Winterfest Party offers an opportunity to heartily toast our favorite mode of transportation. Presented by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the party and art auction also offers a raffle to win a handmade bike-themed quilt and bottomless glasses of beer for the price of admission. (See above; leave the bicycles at home.) Sixty works of art by local artists get shopped during the auction, with musical accompaniment courtesy of DJs Phengren Oswald and Special Lord B. Lucky of the Elbo Room’s Saturday Night Soul Party. This marks the 15th anniversary of the Winterfest Party; past events have attracted überhip tastemakers in the bicycle scene, notables such as Gary Fisher (whom many hail as the inventor of the modern mountain bike) and even gladhanding local pols. The party benefits the coalition’s activism and outreach efforts, but your motivation need not be so pure: Because bicyclists are demonstrably smarter, wittier, and better-looking than your average driver, it’s a great opportunity for hook-ups, as long as you don’t mind a little ironic-mustache burn.
