Radical Shopping

It happens every year: The media blitz begins on Black Friday and Cyber Monday compelling us to buy a pile of crap bound to be obsolete by April. For those of us who have resisted the siren call of consumerism so far, the S.F. Arts Market offers a holiday shopping alternative. Presented by local nonprofit arts incubator Independent Arts & Media, the weekly market is a street fair for the crafty, the DIY, and the handmade, as opposed to the gadgets and tacky ephemera found at Westfield. San Francisco artists, crafters, self-publishers, musicians, jewelers, fashion designers, and more come together to hawk gifts that may not be on Oprah’s list of favorite things but are definitely on ours. This isn’t some Regretsy-level crap you’ll be embarrassed to watch Mom open on Christmas morning, either. The SF Arts Market features work by some of the city’s most notable creators, including the anthropomorphic beasts of Animal Instincts, the small-press publications of Ink. Publishing and Design, and the technicolor monstrosities of the Lower Haters. Plus, there’s the satisfaction that comes from putting your money into the pockets of San Francisco artists instead of throwing it at a faceless corporate monolith, allowing you to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts while sticking it to the man.
