Phurbu T. Namgyal is a pop singer raised in India, living in Minnesota, and heavy into Tibetan music — making him an honorary San Franciscan. At Tibet Day, the annual cultural festival set up to celebrate the traditions and contemporary realities of the tiny nation — 2010 marks 25 years, sigh. In working, as the Dalai Lama does, to foster understanding between Tibetan and Chinese citizens, organizing group Bay Area Friends of Tibet presents samples of the nation's famously delicate, philosophical, and frankly gorgeous arts and crafts. A sand mandala, handmade goods to browse, traditional dance performances, films, food, and a Tibetan-Chinese discussion panel fill out the daytime activities. And at night, an Evening Music Concert features a children's chorus, folk musicians, and at least one honorary San Franciscan, heavy into Tibetan music. “Peace, Love, Happiness to all !!!” as Namgyal says on his website.
