Being a long-term Posies fan brings with it worries of uncertainty, as the power-pop band has spent years bouncing between hiatus and activity. Emerging from Washington state in the late '80s while eschewing the grit of grunge, the act broke up in 1998 only to regroup a couple of years later. The Posies' latest record, Blood/Candy (Rykodisc), comes five years after predecessor Every Kind of Light. (Lead Posies Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow got caught up with solo pursuits and spots in Big Star.) Their seventh LP champions the tender, frequently forlorn rock the band has long been fond of, with acoustic guitars and '60s pop-rock stylings sharing room with easily digestible melodies and falsetto-prone vocals. Lately, outside collaborations have been a prevailing theme for the group: Blood/Candy includes cameos from members of the Stranglers, Letters to Cleo, and Broken Social Scene, while its current tour has featured Auer and Stringfellow providing back-up magic for Raconteurs guitarist Brendan Benson.
