It's easy to be jaded this time of year, what with retailers aiming for our hearts using doublespeak that would make a politician jealous. They post signs reminding us that this is “The Season of Sharing,” when what they really mean is “Buy Our Stuff That You Don't Need, Share It with Someone Else, and Get the Holiday Guilt Monkey Off Your Back.” Maybe going for a run would do you good — and hey, you're in luck, because today there are two whose entry fees are bona fide acts of sharing. The Miracle Mile and Christmas Classic 5K benefit The Rose Home, a clean-and-sober women's shelter in the Bayview. The home was started by Gwen Strain, who was left homeless by Hurricane Katrina but later inherited enough money from her mother to open the shelter. Today's Miracle Mile is a point-to-point, slight downhill race — no wonder its record is 3:59 — on John F. Kennedy Drive that ends near the Polo Fields and Spreckels Lake. The Christmas Classic 5K is a scenic loop in the same area, mostly flat with one small hill. Both races are organized by the Ohana Road Runners. There are awards in each age division as well as cash prizes and drawings.
