Shout Out to the Satanists

There's hating the holidays (whine, whine, whine), there's doing something about it (boycott, protest, volunteer), and there's having a devilish laugh at the expense of those who take it all too seriously (Black X Mass). This is the 13th year (no, really) that it's been put on by Karla LaVey, founder of the First Satanic Church. She's the daughter of the late Anton LaVey, who founded the original Church of Satan and wrote The Satanic Bible. One might think that organized, overt Satanists would be all dark and dour and defensive on this day, the Christian-Capitalist Super Bowl, but one would be wrong. Karla & Co. are known for being simultaneously fierce and funny. Acts include oddball rockers the Fuxedos, black-wall-of-sound providers the Graves Brothers Deluxe, and guitar-and-horn heroes Los Murderachis (who've been described as Day of the Dead figurines come to life). Barney the Theremin Wizard deals experimental electronica, and Dimesland delivers what it calls “avant metal.” The Devil Dancers, well, they dance.
