The Best of All Possible Stage Shows

The circus arts — juggling, acrobatics, clowning, and the like — are dogged by corniness. They are not fine arts. They are not unfunny. They wear too many sequins. But local troupe Sweet Can Productions fights the corn and wins at a new show, Candid. Sweet Can pulls stunts, all right; many of the performers are results of the San Francisco Circus Center, so bods contort, balls are suspended in the air for comedic effect, and there's funny walking. But the company's past shows have made it known for lyricism and artfulness: The trapeze lady spinning in a dappled pool of light appears to be dancing underwater, and the man in the cartwheel contraption defies gravity to a gently welling orchestral score. For this production, the ensemble includes famous flying dancer Joanna Haigood, original music by EO, and many, many hula hoops.
