Westerners seeking enlightenment in Eastern religion are nothing new in works of art or for artists themselves. The Beatles spent time with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, after which their music took a distinct turn toward the Indian. Singer-songwriter Cat Stevens left his career after converting to Islam and taking the religion as his new last name. The lead character in W. Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge searched for decades before finally discovering transcendence high on an Asian mountain. Very serious stuff. But let's say a modern guy goes to Japan on a similar mission. Only, his flights get canceled. And his luggage gets lost. And the caretaker of the legendary shrine he's visiting is grumpy. What would his experience look like? The answer is in Mr YooWho's Holiday. Veteran clowning and circus performer Moshe Cohen plays the title role. His character is matched with trickster and servant Taro-kaja, played by Jubilith Moore, who has extensive experience with Japanese Noh theater and the more comic style of Kyogen. Their absurdist adventure includes a diva sunflower as well as a penguin who high-dives. Even though things don't go as Mr. YooWho planned, he still might find what he's looking for.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Dec. 24. Continues through Jan. 2, 2010
