Oceans of Bass

For those awash in celebration, those drowning in champagne, AnonEvents, Sunset Promotions, and An-Ten-Nae present Sea of Dreams, a "GalaxSea of New Year's Eve-O-Lution." Visually, it will transform the S.F. Concourse Exhibition Center with performance art, floating cabarets, interactive artists, analog play areas, and other fluid diversions. Aurally, Germany's Modeselektor (the duo of Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary) will construct viscous sets saturated with low-end bass. Exploring all the permutations of bass-heavy music that have impacted London and Berlin, Modeselektor specializes in cheeky, tweaky tracks drawn from minimal techno, funky, dubstep, house, and more. Meanwhile, Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation (the duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) massages more than pokes and tickles. There's less pure bounce and caustic squiggle when compared to Modeselektor, but still a love of dub balladry, ambient caress, punchy worldbeat and ethereal textures. Additional musical performers, including Balkan Beat Box, Beats Antique, Meat Katie, and over a dozen more make sure the vibe consistently flows from jaunty and gypsy to melody-rich big beat and beyond.
