Rick Prelinger is a legend among weird nerds. That sounds bad, unless you think weird nerds make the world go around, which we do. Prelinger's famous free archive of ephemeral films is a stunning collection of bizarre educational Americana, for one thing. For another, he's a homegrown historian whose lectures regularly sell out big halls, as he did recently for the City Arts & Lectures series at the huge Herbst Theater. Tonight he screens Lost Landscapes of Detroit, and one of his aims with the film is to avoid “ruin porn,” a very smart and useful new term we'll be adopting. Instead of merely looking at wrecked-up cities, Prelinger has a definite perspective, and audiences tonight get to experience it in a not at all huge room.
