Paradox in Portraiture
Geoff Chadsey examines gay life in his portraits, especially its enigmas and fears. Unlike the fiercely graphic homoerotic scenes photographed by, say, Robert Mapplethorpe or the exaggerated clone-like men drawn by Tom of Finland, Chadsey renders people you might know -- including some of their intensely private (and sometimes horrific) moments you might not know. His new exhibit, "shift, return," is a homecoming of sorts. He was educated at the California College of the Arts and has been shown at the SFMOMA, among other venues, but this is Chadsey’s first solo exhibit in San Francisco. In his large-scale drawings on Mylar, he captures his subjects’ exhibitionism while also showing their coy, reticent sides – and sometimes their solo moments of utter terror in self-reflection.
