First it was a board game with lots of shiny pieces (revolver, knife, candle holder) as well as cards, characters, and secret envelopes to help solve a murder. Second it was a motion picture loaded with fancy costumery and comedic star power (Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Christopher Lloyd). Now it's an intimate theater production. It's Clue, and if any small company could take on such an amorphous idea without going all contrarian Samuel Beckett minimalist, it's this one. We've told you before that no other small theater group in the city consistently presents such visually impressive productions. The play mirrors the game — the audience is elevated on all sides of a life-size board — while the script pays homage to the acting (and sometimes shoddy directing) of the movie. Clue follows six guests at a party (including Miss Scarlet, Col. Mustard, and Mrs. Peacock) as well as the butler (Wadsworth) who serves them at the remote mansion location. A seventh guest (appropriately named Mr. Boddy) is found dead, and the survivors work to find the perpetrator before more, um, Boddys turn up.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Feb. 22-25. Starts: Jan. 12. Continues through Feb. 19, 2011
