Davey Havok and Jade Puget settled into their roles as AFI's sullen-looking heartthrobs long ago, and in Blaqk Audio, they venture into electronica while retaining that po-faced sensibility. On 2007 debut, CexCells, Puget commands looming synths and marginally enthused claps; his fashionista friend oscillates between soft purrs and agonized shouts. As is often the case with post-2000 AFI, Havok tends to overwrite his lyrics, musing on affection, sex, and pain like he's forcing himself to constantly churn out grand statements. (Take this passage from "Semiotic Love": "I will walk across the ocean to where the sky meets the sea/Give this ghost my devotion to keep you from me.") Over the past year, a few new Blaqk Audio songs have emerged; no word so far on a second album's release date, but when it gets put together, expect for Puget and Havok to shoot for more earth-shattering drama.
