• MTV trotted out rising Berkeley rapper Lil B for new show The Vice Guide To Life last week. Thankfully, it even got B to explain his obsession with Miley Cyrus. It was pretty funny.
• S.F. troubadour John Vanderslice and the Magik*Magik Orchestra team up on the gorgeous White Wilderness, due Jan. 25 — a record we hope will get more indie types appreciating classical music and more classical snobs opening up to modern folk. This city is great at both, people.
• Starting this week, local promoter FolkYeah begins a Winter Residency series of $5 shows Tuesday nights at Slim's. Going to see solid local bands pretty much beats whatever else you have planned for a Tuesday — and your broke-after-the-holidays ass can even afford to go.
• Los Lobos, Jackie Greene, and Poor Man's Whiskey played at the Fillmore for what would have been Bay Area concert promoter Bill Graham's 80th birthday on Saturday. The show was a benefit for Graham's memorial foundation, which supports the arts, music, and education.

• These words are off limits for new band names after severe overuse in recent years: "teen," "sun," "black," "boys," "girls," "kids," "young," "lil," "magic," and "bear" (or any other animal name). We're tempted to add "wolf" to the list as well. No bones if you're Girls, Teen Daze, or Minus the Bear, but can't new bands find some new name ideas?
• Jeff Jacobs, trumpet player in S.F. jazz ensemble the Drift, passed away at his family home in Michigan Jan. 6 after a long, expensive battle with cancer. He will be missed.
• S.F's DJ Earworm slammed all of Billboard's Top 25 pop songs from 2010 into one mashup. The result? A technically impressive but icky-sounding sonic casserole that tastes mostly like Katy Perry and Ke$ha. It's proof that pop flavors are better on their own.
• After an outpouring of glow-stick-lit, fuzzy-hatted criticism, S.F. lawmaker Fiona Ma backed off a proposal to ban raves at public property in California. At least for now.
• Aerial dancer Sarah Johnston broke both arms and fractured her skull after falling during her routine at the Sea of Dreams New Year's Eve party. Help her out at www.agentred.net/donate.
• The arrival of 2011 marks the closure of two music venues in S.F.: Coda Supper Club, a plush, friendly jazz club on Mission Street with a great live calendar, and the Triple Crown, a bar at Market and Octavia that often featured solid DJ nights. Goddamn you, Great Recession.
