As the Blow, Khaela Maricich frames her performances in an unusual fashion. The primary aspect of a Blow show involves the New York–based artist playing material plucked from her indie-pop project's records, while the less conventional part focuses on her interest in performance art. 2006's Paper Television, her last record, contains love songs both flummoxed and hopeful. Whirring electronic throbs and minimalist percussion back Maricich as her airy voice unravels stories about journeying through a former lover's digestive system and the possibility of weeping near cold cuts. Recently, her monologue-heavy onstage routine has involved an alliance with girlfriend and installation artist Melissa Dyne, a narrative that nods to Lindsay Lohan's perpetually eroding personal life, and a well-meaning (but dire) cover of Eminem's "Lose Yourself." Although Jona Bechtolt, the other half of the Blow, dipped out a while back, Maricich's playful spark still powers the project handsomely.
