Democracy in the Middle East

If you're looking for musical democracy, get your ass to Tel Aviv, a resort destination with nightlife that ranks among the best the Mediterranean coast has to offer. Residents of Israel's most cosmopolitan city were early dance music adopters, supporting thriving techno, dubstep, and downtempo scenes. One of those is Soulico, the DJ quartet of Sabbo, Rob, Shimmy Sonic, and Wido, whose albums and club sets are a funky internationalist blend of electronic beats, reggae, hip-hop, Jewish folk, and Middle Eastern music. Their 2009 JDub Records release, Exotic on the Speaker, featured collaborations with hot talent like Rye Rye, Lyrics Born, and the Bay Area's own Del the Funky Homosapien. Om Records' J-Boogie and S.F. bass troublemakers (and Slayers Club DJs) Manitous, Matt Haze, Joe Mousepad, and Professor Bang join Soulico to bring more heat than a spicy hummus dip on Thursday, Feb. 24, at Public Works.
