Four days in March are super fancy: Fat Tuesday in the Fillmore doesn't just mean the $300 costume contest at the Masquerade Ball on Mardi Gras proper, although it does mean that. But it also means kids' activities (including face painting -- why are kids with their faces painted even cuter than they are all the time?) and good food and lots and lots of music fanned out over the weekend and the ensuing weekstart. A really gorgeous-looking film -- Flags, Feathers, and Lies -- screens, jam sessions crop up, and on Sunday, there's a procession from St. John Coltrane Church to Marcus Bookstore. It all benefits the Village Project, which runs local kids' activities.
