It's funny, really, that of the very few bands that receive fresh life decades after sputtering out, one of them is called Death. Not to be confused with the metal act of the same name, this Death was formed in Detroit in the '70s and put down early as it seemed like its sound couldn't sell. Years later, the band's 1974 demo was exhumed from an attic, and Drag City Records relaunched it as 2009's ... for the Whole World to See. Turns out, this protopunk, semipsychedelic outfit made some smart, manic material, and its story received a flurry of press. Also, the trio of brothers in Death retroactively predates Bad Brains as the first all-black punk band, further enhancing their mythology. Though their revival hasn't been all roses (guitarist David Hackney died from lung cancer in 2000), just knowing that these guys are getting a second shot is exhilarating.
