The little red-lit hole in the wall at 20th and Valencia has slowly been morphing into ship shape from its former life as a punk-wrecked Victorian beer hall. On St. Patrick's Day, the whole place is likely to set sail, as the owner's band, a traditional sea-shanty trio basted in whiskey and cheerful heartbreak, takes the holiday by, well, storm. The Barbary Ghosts are anchored by Shawn the saloon owner's strong, rough-cut voice and guitar; captained by the tin whistle, button accordion, and sweet, sweet voice of a lady called Joan, while a fine lad name of Jason fills the sails with a fiddle, not a violin. Together they rock the traditional-type yo-ho-hoedown tunes, including our favorite, a ditty prophetically titled "Boozin'." Some scallywags called Shameless Seamus & Aimless Amos share the stage, as does the magnificent Freddi Price.
