Eggs — we know about eggs. At CoLoRes OrGaniCos! Robert Yamir Hernandez shows people how to make paint pigments out of bugs, plants, burnt stuff, rocks, dirt, flowers, and a lot more; it’s all new to us. But plenty of artists know about egg tempera — you can hold an egg yolk with two fingers, slit the bottom, let the interior of the yolk run out, and be left with something that will never fade. Ever. It’s on medieval frescoes and oil paintings, and as you know, it’s hard to get off your car. But Hernandez’ color workshop methods for making natural paint compounds sound even better than playing with food, because he’s studied local and indigenous traditions from all over, and he helps visitors make their own pigments. All the materials are from nature and we’re envisioning, but have not been promised, the use of large mortar-and-pestle setups, tearing up flower petals, and soaking things in stuff.
