Some of us still love listening to records, relishing the soft crackle behind Nina Simone’s fierce voice, or a reliable skip on a copy of Steve Martin’s The Jerk. In another vein entirely, a cadre of North Beach artists have used 12-inch vinyl albums as canvases to be auctioned off in “Vinyl Transformations.” Artists including Jack Hirschman, Momo, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Winston Smith, and more took a paintbrush to the circular target and rendered things beautiful, precious, abstract, and political. All proceeds benefit North Beach Citizens, an organization working in the North Beach community to empower homeless and low-income residents. After demonstrating an interest in changing their circumstances, clients are given a mailing address, two meals a day, library resources, and advocacy. Services such as those provided by North Beach Citizens not only improve the quality of life of those participating, but they greatly reduce the strain on taxpayers who subsidize the health care and judicial services used by people without preventative care. Call it recycling, re-purposing, community activism, or just call it art.
