Jay Howell

Jay Howell is the Face of Feelings for certain slabs of artist culture. He draws those slouching dudes and gals with the pooch bellies, skinny legs, and gaping mouths that evoke the kind of ennui that plagues the socially active thirtysomething human: experiences of solitude, reflections on joining a crowd, slugging a beer, sucking on a cigarette. His speech-bubbles are always astute, silly jabs at youth culture. One character, stumbling upon two earnestly political artists, asks, “What are you wheat-pasting?” and gets the answers, “A poor person with a machine gun!” and “A Black guy!” Le sigh. Everyone’s just trying to live, right? Tonight’s 'zine release party for Howell’s Punks Git Cut coincides with a group art exhibit curated by local publishers of underground books and comics, Last Gasp. At the Art Almighty/Last Gasp Reception, copies of Punks Git Cut will be for sale, as well as limited edition Jay Howell T-shirts. Stop by, look at lots of work by talented artists, feel something, drink it away at the bar. Boogie and chat with the kind of folks who enjoy the same things as you.
