In a democracy, everyone gets to do whatever they want. And as the what-did-we-do-before-it success of karaoke teaches us, what everyone wants to do is sing. The Artificial Idol television show teaches us this same lesson. More than bars or small screens, though, the place people really want to sing is in movie theaters at the same time as actors. Thus the popularity of sing-along versions of musical films around here, most of them hosted by Laurie Bushman and some combination of charming gents. For the screening of the Sing-Along Wizard of Oz, the genre's urtext in some ways, the gents are Joe Wicht and David Hawkins. No earplugs are in the goody bags, not even for "Over the Rainbow," so you're warned, democrat.
