The so-called songs on Salem's debut album, King Night, are equal parts haunting (or grating) noise, fascinating (or aimless) ambience, heavy (or cheesy) electronic beats, and a bizarre combo of pitch-bent raps and ethereal effects-soaked chants. The Midwestern trio's first recording, a self-produced EP unironically titled Yes I Smoke Crack, says it all. The group's soundscapes froth up from a fog of drugs and disillusionment, and leave a twisted darkness pulsing at their core.
