You’re Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond

Have you ever had unclean thoughts about a tree? Yes you have. Yes you have. Yes you HAVE. Anyway, you’re in good company: The tree-mendous ent-ertainer Justin Vivian Bond is in town to celebrate a new record called Dendrophile, which, if we can be permitted to exaggerate, means tree-fucker. “I love to hear the thunder of your world crashing down,” Bond sings on a song from another record, but still, one that’s easy to imagine your tree whispering to you. Trees whisper, a lot; it’s important. Speaking of a lot, that’s what goes on with the performer in question — last seen in San Francisco for a Valentine’s Day Karen Carpenter-off, Bond is announcing that gender binaries are annoying, everyone must drop “he/she” and replace it with “V,” and that “Mx.” is the new “Ms.” So there’s that, as well as the nearly incomprehensible level of Rufus/Bowie-style diva-level raw vocal talent onstage thinking about sexy trees.
