The rusted guitar flourishes and quaking electronic textures of Kurt Vile's new album, Smoke Ring for My Halo, come across like a soundtrack for a frosty winter day. But the real treat here is Vile's delectably poignant baritone. The Philadelphia singer, now three albums into his contract with Matador, brings a weary, disassociated sense of gravitas that recalls Bruce Springsteen circa Darkness on the Edge of Town. Vile sings of squandered friendship and missed opportunities on the everyman anthem "Runners Up," begging for the strength to continue persevering. It's a well-worn, saccharine trick, but in his delicate hands, it works.
