In this age of recycling-awareness saturation and DIY everything, creating couture from used clothes for a runway fashion show should strike fear into very few designers. Here's what could: The moment when the MC of said fashion show turns to the audience, composed of fashion people, money people, and generally put-together people, and says, "How much?" That's what's on call at Discarded to Divine, in which local and internationally known designers (like Project Runway's Sweet P) create product from the contents of the St. Vincent de Paul donation box, enjoy a full-scale runway show, then immediately receive feedback in a most honest, brutal manner: with a live auction of the wares. During a previous year's event, we saw more than a few outfits greeted with a silence that could only be described as deathly -- we were dying, anyway. Others fared better, with money showered upon them in $100 increments as the auctioneer dashed the floor and spouses elbowed their better-earning partners. It's all for charity, benefiting St. Vincent de Paul, so there's a certain amount of altruistic bidding going on, but still: The designers want to grab you by the throat, followed by the pocketbook.
