You know how in the ’80s there were a bunch of big-time comedians whose style consisted of rapid-fire one- or two-liners thrown out in such power-joshing fashion, you could barely laugh lest you miss another sexist joke? That was fine. Between those clowns and screwball soft porn like Porky’s, the comedy scene had a certain tenor. Are we more refined in 2011? Certainly not. But the rise of the patient, storytelling comedian has been a welcome addition to the laughable landscape, and a great talent stands before us in Hannibal Buress. His confident, often-absurdist style allows his audience to sink into a joke and enjoy it without the anxiety that seeps through every other experience in the world besides … (please submit ideas). Buress wrote for Saturday Night Live from 2009 to 2010, then was tapped to write for season five of that beacon of smart sitcom hilarity, 30 Rock. He appears tonight and the next few with talented funnyman David Huntsberger and one of our local greats, Chris Garcia.
