Identifying one band as "[insert noun here]" on "[acid/weed/some other narcotic]" is an ancient cliché of music journalism, but once in a while, the tactic produces a brilliant, perfect image. This is the argument for relaying how YouTube commenter fuknuget (lovely name) knew someone who described Battles' "Atlas" as "Smurfs on LSD." Just listening to the track from 2007's Mirrored makes it easy to imagine a gaggle of those blue creatures gleefully skipping and chanting along as the N.Y.C. experimental rockers soundtrack their first trip. In an interview, Battles drummer John Stanier once explained, "We aren't making instant music," but that doesn't mean the band's futuristic weirdness can't be fun. Now a trio, its second LP, Gloss Drop, comes out June 7. If we're fortunate, this one'll have something akin to Care Bears on PCP.
